N.W.A’s second album, Straight Outta Compton, released in 1988, is one of the records that established West Coast gangsta rap as a genre and pushed it into the mainstream. The lyrical content didn’t speak of revolution so much as unbridled rebellion, which made it threatening to law enforcement (enough to prompt the FBI to send a letter to Incidentally, upon its release, ‘Straight Outta Compton’ was the first rap album ever to receive a 5-star review from Rolling Stone. Smashing through the gates with the title track, it’s a take-no-prisoners affair, before being smashed in the face with one of the great modern-day protest songs ever, ‘Fuck tha Police.’. Straight Outta Compton does not pull punches in portraying how the band members hated authority (and vice-versa), how most of the women in their lives were treated and just how many times the words “nigger” and “fuck” could be used in a major motion picture release. The LAPD is given no quarter either, but to be fair, neither is Suge 'Straight Outta Compton' is a story told with great pace, fantastic acting and some true moments that will resonate emotionally. Any fan of this group of artist will love the moments when the songs are written and performed in concert. I was actually surprised that this film did not get more Oscar buzz.
